UNP says the police inaction promots more election violence

The main opposition, United National Party (UNP), accused the police of not taking action against the ruling party supporters who unleash violence against their supporters.

UNP supporters, led by Chief Ministerial candidate Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera, protested in front of Anuradhapura police station and then proceeded to the town.

UNP parliamentarian P Harison said police inaction against the perpetrators of violence helps spreading attacks against UNP supporters.

Much of the violence against UNP is reported from Thalawa and Thambuttegama police divisions.

UNP election offices in the area have come under continuous attacks and arson attacks.

Journalist Athula Bandara reports that UNP is also accused attacking the offices of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Meanwhile, a Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated movement protested in Anuradhapura town against alleged election malpractices.

Peoples Movement for Protecting Schools accused the ruling UPFA of using public property for election campaign.

The elections for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils are to be held on 23 August.
