AG ordered to show cause

The Supreme Court in Sri Lanka has ordered the Attorney General (AG) to explain as to why security forces photographed Tamils
in Modera area.
Three-member bench chaired by Chief Justice Sarath N Silva made the order as a petition against the move by the security forces were taken for the hearing. The petition was filed by the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC), a coalition partner of Rajapaksa administration. A counsel representing the CWC informed the judiciary that security forces have brought a group of Tamils in Modera to a playground on 02 July and taken individual photographs. Taking photographs of only Tamil nationals amount to violating their Fundamental Rights, he argued. Admitting that the action was controversial, the CJ ordered the AG to consult submit a report with the response from Modera police station. |
