The American-based organisation, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), has protested to the Sri Lankan government over its
policies towards journalists who write critically about the conflict with Tamil Tiger rebels.
In a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, trhe committee says that it has seen an increase in harassment, intimidation and
detertion of reporters.
It also alleges that police have not investigated the death of a television journalist, Paranirupasingam Devakumar, who was
killed in the Jaffna peninsula last month in area under military control.
The committee says that while it recognises that the Sri Lankan government is in an ongoing conflict with Tamil secessionists,
the security of the nation will not be enhanced by policies that curtail the right to freedom of expression.
