Extensive fighting in Mannar
 
Thirty LTTE cadres killed and another fifty injured in fierce fighting in the Mannar area, Army Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

The army has got the casualty information by intercepting LTTE communication, Brigadier Nanayakkara said.

Six soldiers were also killed in the gun battle. Twenty five others sustained injuries, he said.

Fighting continued in four directions north of Mannar and the LTTE retreated from the forward defence line in the face of army firing, he said.

Amidst heavy resistance of Tigers, Army troops extended their line further northward.

Fighting which began around 4.30 on Saturday morning continued for one and a half hours, Brigadier Nanayakkara said.

LTTE in a statement said that Sri Lanka Army lost 15 army men and more than 75 others were injured in the fighting. Three LTTE cadres were also killed in the clashes, it said.

There are no independent reports to confirm the casualty figures.
