London based human rights group Amnesty International (AI) says Sri Lanka government has breached international covenants
on civil and political rights in detaining a Tamil journalist.
The editor of the Outreach Lanka website and a columnist for Sunday Times, JS Tissainayagam, was detained by the Terrorism Investigation division (TID) since 07 March. In a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition to the Supreme Court, Mr. Tissainayagam said he was inhumanely treated in custody and not informed of any charges against him. He was arrested as he visited a coleague arrested by the TID on 06 March, the journalist said.
He was allowed to meet the lawyer after filing the petition but the AI says he was only once allowed to meet the legal representative on 21 March. The arbitrary arrest under emergency Regulations, AI says, has clearly violated Sri Lanka's obligations under international treaties. "He is at risk of going blind if he does not receive specialist treatment for a serious eye condition," an AI statement issued on Friday said. The Sri Lanka government has accused the journalist of supporting the Tamil Tigers. |
