Military says 30 LTTE bunkers were destroyed in the operation
The military in Sri Lanka says it has destroyed thirty Tamil Tigers bunkers in a coordinated attack against a rebel stronghold in the north of the country.

Twelve LTTE rebels are reported to be killed in the operation, military said.

It said planes and tanks were involved in the attack, but the claims have not been independently verified.

The government has been stepping up its strikes against the rebels, with the army commander, Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, promising to achieve a final victory by the end of the year.

On Tuesday, the UN said bombs have fallen in "close proximity" of the UNICEF compound in rebel -held Kilinochchi.

Head of UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sri Lanka, Zola Dowell, told BBC Sandeshaya that no damage is reported to the UN compound and all UN staff are accounted for.

The Tamil Tigers have been fighting for more than twenty years to create a separate state in the north and east of the island.
