Jaffna not safe for journalists

Protest by jounalists
Journalist Dhramaratnam sivaram was killed in Colombo
Press rights groups have said that the Jaffna peninsula in Sri Lanka is one of the worst places in the world for journalists to operate.

They called on the government to investigate a spree of murders.

Seven media workers have been killed in just over a year in Jaffna, which is held by the Sri Lankan military and is often hit by fighting between the government and separatist Tamil rebels.

The groups say dozens of journalists have fled the area or abandoned the profession.

Earlier this month, the United Nations said Sri Lanka had one of the worst records in the world for humanitarian aid worker safety.
