UNP urges India to allow Sri Lanka's Tamils to settle in
Sri Lanka's main opposition party has requested the giant neighbour to allow minority Tamils to settle in India.

The United National Party (UNP) legislator Lakshman Kiriella said the party urges India to allow Tamils to migrate until their safety is guaranteed by the island nation.

The UNP made the request after hundreds of Tamils were evicted from Colombo's lodges by the police.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered an immediate investigation into the eviction, a statement by the presidential secretariat said.

'Immediate' report

"Allegations that officials exceeded their authority will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate remedial action will be taken, including disciplinary action against any wrongdoing on the part of any Government official," the statement added.

But the main opposition party says Sri Lanka's Tamils were left with no alternative.

"What is the alternative? They can not stay in the north and east because of the threats by the LTTE," UNP parliamentarian said.

The presidential secretariat said over 350 Tamils were transported to the north and the east on Thursday according to reports.
