M. A. Piyasena, Divisional Secretary told Sandeshaya that all precausions are taken to secure the safety of the victims.

Speaking to the BBC from the bank of "Yodha weva", the Divisional Secretary said, "this time around the floods are worse than 2006".

"Yodha Weva is overflowing but we had managed to secure it with the help of the Army, Navy and the irrigation department. But, three smaller tanks were destroyed earlier".

Hundreds of homes destroyed

"Weeravila Weva is also overflowing. Over four thousand families are displaced at the moment." Said M. A. Piyasena.

"We have set up twelve camps to house the displaced. They are kept out of danger and food and other amneties are supplied by the government".

According to official sources, hundreds of homes were detroyed due to the floods. Over four thousand acres of paddy fields had also been submerged in the disaster.

Kataragama temple area was also flooded as Manik Ganga overflowed causing damage to property.

However there were no fatalities or heavy injuries reported from the district.
