Compulsive
smoker, K (Abraham) accidentally falls asleep in his bathtub only
to find himself in a haunting dream which sees him held captive
by Russian soldiers.
Gagging
for a smoke, the soldiers stop at nothing to prevent him from smoking
but, thankfully, it's only a dream!
A fully-fledged
addicted smoker, K turns a deaf ear to his wife's constant nagging
until she threatens him to visit Baba, who runs a rehabilitation
centre for all sorts of addictions and afflictions.
Forced
to enter into an agreement, a proud and desperate K challenges Baba's
beliefs.
This
leads to one-upmanship between the self-assumed all-knowing Baba
and the frantic, unsuspecting K in this dreamy thriller.
Director
Kashyap defies all Bollywood norms by attempting an idea in the
film noir genre which will appear to be weird and hard to digest
by the average cinemagoer.
There
is no logic in the storyline. Constantly switching from reality
and dream sequences makes it more confusing to decipher what's going
on.
However,
No Smoking scores highly in the technical departments with a captivating
musical score and stunning cinematography.
John
Abraham plays his part well as the happy-go-lucky smoking addict
whilst Ayesha Takia impresses as K's nagging wife and Paresh Rawal
gives a typically brilliant performance as Baba.
On
the whole, this flick from EROS International is too artistic to
be fully appreciated. By the end, even nonsmokers will be gagging
for a fag!
