A survey has revealed that £8.5bn is needed to repairs all the roads in the country. A national survey claims that the number of potholes in England has increased by a third over the past year. In Shropshire there is a special inspection patrol to try and keep on top of the problem.
David Weeks, the Director of the Asphalt Industry Alliance, which carried out the survey, said councils were faced with the problem of mending the holes in the road and in some cases, facing compensation claims from motorists who's vehicles had been damaged. He also said utility companies who dig up the road cause huge problems: "They reduce the planned life of the road by something like 30% and they are also prone to cracking and needing to be repaired once the workmen have gone away." Inspection regimeBrian Bennett a highways manager at Shropshire Council said the county had around the average number of potholes in the roads, but they are still a problem: "They are a continual headache to us and the maintenance section." He blamed the weather for much of the damage: "We have had a particularly bad winter; a lot of freezing and thawing and obviously it's finding the weak spots on the roads and the potholes are breaking out." Heavy lorries also contribute to the problem, damaging the edges of the road. Drivers complained about road works slowing them down but: "Mostly people are pleased to see us repairing the potholes." Mr Bennet said there was an inspection regime in place in the county and any damage was quickly mended. The repairs are being made easier by two new 'Roadmaster' machines: "We get a better quality of repair. So we've got those working through the county within the good weather period throughout the summer." last updated: 02/05/2009 at 14:44 SEE ALSOYou are in: Shropshire > Radio Shropshire > Radio Features > Potholes cost county £0.5m a year |
