David Williams Does Shropshire need a gay scene?By Pete Collins Scattered and out-of-touch - that's the issue facing many of Shropshire's gay community. Pete Collins asks if the county's bars and clubs could do more to encourage a local gay scene.
With Wolverhampton and Birmingham being the closest places to find a significant gay scene, it's no wonder that a lot of gay people feel out-of-the-loop in Shropshire. Although some local venues are offering sporadic events, the question remains - why is there nothing more? Paul Gruffudd, from the Terrence Higgins Trust, believes that there's a long way to go: "There are a lot gay men and women that are quite isolated in various parts of the county." Yet he thinks that people are starting to become confident enough to make the changes they feel have been long overdue within Shropshire.
Evidence of this is becoming clear, with bars like The Claddagh in Telford promoting a gay-friendly policy. With various other establishments beginning to follow suit, a change in attitude towards homosexuality in the county finally appears to be happening.
