They come from all over the world and vary in shape, size and colour; and hundreds have died in pursuit of them. Scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in South West London have recently discovered a new species of Orchid; and named it Aeranthes Virginalis.
The Orchid was once upon a time, a prized flower - elusive, expensive and exotic. It continues to enchant and delight many people who are attending the annual Orchid Show at Kew - to enjoy a spectacular display of colour and fragrance.
Charlotte Njeru spoke to Dr David Roberts, an Orchid botanist at Kew, as well as some of the flowers' admirers. The 'The Orchid Exposed' is at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew until 14 March
