The 19th century town of Preston was immortalised by Charles Dickens as Coke Town but few people remember its Georgian heritage.
And yet, as Daniel Defoe remarked in his Tour of England, Preston's promenade offered one of the 'most delicate scenes in England'.
Amanda Vickery went to see for herself, in a bid to get a glimpse of the lives of young women in the 19th century.
