The Assembly Rooms in York |
Friday 9 May 2003 |

There was no greater gathering for Georgian women than the Assembly.
It was the 18th century version of a disco, where groups of young women could show off their chic clothes and dancing talents. And few towns could boast finer Assembly Rooms than York.
Amanda Vickery soaks up the excitement of a night out in a Georgian town. The reading is from 'Evelina' by Fanny Burney, published by Oxford University Press, page 29.
