When a man gets sent to prison, he often leaves a partner and family on the outside. If he's lucky, they'll pay him regular visits.
Last year the Social Exclusion Unit reported on how vital families on the outside are in helping prisoners to go straight when they get out. But prison visits have halved over the past three years and just over fifty per cent of the country's 138 prisons have visitor centres.
At Manchester Prison - formerly known as Strangeways - an initiative has been launched to make the whole experience more family friendly. It includes a comic explaining to children what they can expect during a prison visit. Clare Jenkins reports...
