In 1903 The Association to Promote the Higher Education of Working Men was formed, but it was quickly re-named the Workers' Educational Association to avoid causing unnecessary offence to the Women's Co-operative Guild.
Now women form the majority of WEA students and employees and to celebrate the organisation's centenary, their experiences are being collated.
Judy Merry went to find out more about the part women have played in the WEA over the last 100 years.
