From George Orwell's hatred of the suburbs to the sitcom caricatures of Hyacinth Bouquet and the Essex girls Sharon and Tracey. Suburbia has been the butt of jokes and intellectual sneers since the inter-war years.
But why, given that one third of us already live in the suburbs and many more are set to do so.
