Until the 17th century, punch was unheard of in Britain. Its origin is Hindu, and comes from the word poonch, meaning five.
All early punch recipes had five main ingredients: water or milk, alcohol, a citrus fruit, sugar and spices.
In the last of the series on the history of women and drink, Jennifer Chevalier spoke to the historian, Elizabeth Gabay, about the origins of the drink.
