Val McDermid's crime fighting duo of Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan first emerged in 1995 with The Mermaids Singing.
The policewoman and the criminal profiler proved such a success that they've now featured in two further crime novels. They're also set to reach a still wider audience with a TV dramatisation starring Robson Green and Hermione Norris.
