Rafters with his family on holiday in Wales

Wrong dog

Listen to the item

Back in the 1960s, the Catcheside family had just returned from holiday, eager to see their Airedale, Rafters, who had been in kennels for the duration.

Dad went off to retrieve Rafters.  It was quite a long journey, but he eventually returned with an Airedale.  The trouble was that it wasn't their Airedale. It wasn't good old Rafters.  Dad stood his ground for a while - but as he had to make the journey again, that's understandable.

Eventually Anne and the children persuaded him that this dog wasn't their dog.  Dad went off and returned with the real McCoy.  Unfortunately, the real Rafters was in a bit of a state because the kennels had got him muddled up with another dog right from the start - and they'd shaved him!

Rafters recovered from his two weeks of kennel-hell but was a bit of a wreck for a while.  A buzzing sound - anything like a pair of electric clippers coming his way - set him shaking again.
