Mind your language

 Listen again in full

The Whittam parents can say "go to your room!" in four languages...

go to your room!

Charles Whittam is British and a former German language teacher who now runs a language school. His wife Carmen is Spanish. They met in France at a linguistics conference where the couple could only speak to each other in French as Carmen didn't speak English.

Carmen and Charles have two daughters, Carmen Sophia and Beatrice. Being good linguists themselves, the parents were keen to pass on their language skills to their children. So Charles speaks only German to the girls and Carmen speaks to them only in Spanish as she doesn't speak German.

Listen to the interview to find out how they manage to communicate with each other!
