Johnny Green/PA Wire: Mark Gregory's award winning garden at Chelsea

Gold Medal Mark

For the second year running Selby garden designer, Mark Gregory, has won a Gold at the Chelsea Flower Show. The judges decided Mark's urban garden, designed for The Children's Society, was deserving of the top grade award.

When he achieved Gold status, with his design for The Children's Society's Urban Garden at the 2008 Chelsea Flower Show, Mark Gregory was delighted and so was the Society. So much so that they asked him to try and repeat his feat with a new design for 2009.

So this year Mark created a stylish and practical back garden to complement last year’s Gold Medal winning front garden. It continues the story of a family who are very aware of where their food comes from and conscious about their environmental impact. The family have adapted their lifestyle to make the most of the garden while learning how to grow vegetables.

Mark's innovative 2009 design for The Children's Society - a garden room for use as a playroom or home office so that parents can work flexibly at home - is intended to embody some of the key things that children need to flourish.

Panels of selected RHS judges - all experts in their field - complete the judging of gardens, floral stands and other exhibits before the show opens to members on the Tuesday. All exhibits are judged using standard criteria - they are not judged against each other.

Mark was absolutely thrilled to hear his design had, for the second successive year, impressed those judges enough to be awarded another Gold for 2009.
