Miles Cain

Singer, songwriter, story teller, journalist, writer, poet... well ok maybe not poet, but Mr Cain is a man of many talents. A regular contributor to More Raw Introducing on BBC Radio York, we pursuaded him to round up a band and play a session.

Miles Cain is a busy chap. If he isn't organising gigs, writing for The talk, playing gigs or interviewing people for More Raw Introducing on BBC Radio York, then he's probably writing more songs.

Though he often performs alone, he's a collaborative type who seems able to pull a great sounding band together at a moments notice. So it was that he was joined by Ron (lead guitar), Dave (bass), Paul (drums), Simon (sax and percussion) and Phil (keys) for a live session on More Raw Introducing.

"I stole this lot. They play in a local covers band. I've been doing stuff with Simon for a few years and he said 'get this lot'. So we did and I think they're about the best bunch I've played with."

You tend to have something of a rock sound, yet you played the 2007 Beverley Folk Festival... how did that come about?

"It doesn't quite add up... but it's a local gig. Actually some of the stuff is definitely influenced by rock, but there are folky moments from the folk cupboard.

"I'm influenced by so many great singer/songwriters, Bob Dylan and Van Morrison to name two... but there are so many it's hard to say.

"When I first started playing live, one of the things I did was go along to the local folk venue where they'd let you have a go. That's one of the ways you cut your teeth and develop a live act. That kind of venue has a lot to offer acoustic artists."

How can people get hold of your music?

"As ever you can find me on MySpace (see link panel right). I recently put a new CD together called: 'A Way of Being Free'. It's been a lot of work but I'm really pleased with it."
