Tony! The Blair Musical

Thank you for the music!

Shaking the stereotypes of political satire, Tony! The Blair Musical is out to shed light on what we all suspected – that our once-beloved Prime Minister Tony Blair is, in fact, a rock god.

Tony! The Blair Musical

From 18th - 21st July 2007 at York Theatre Royal. Tickets available from the box office on 01904 623568 or via the theatre website.

This highly original piece of theatre brings together the usual suspects in contemporary politics, with a witty twist on the trials and tribulations we've all lived through on the news and in the papers.

Told by Blair himself, the intimate setting of the Theatre Royal Studio works perfectly at creating a diary-like rendition of events, with guest appearances from the likes of John Prescott, Alistair Campbell, George W Bush – and even Princess Diana.

A cast of six actors provide brilliant representations of their characters, mimicking voices and mannerisms to perfection. James Duckworth gives an amazing performance as Blair himself, with the supporting cast being just as impressive.

The writing and talents of the actors is smart enough, however, to provide great interpretations of these famous faces – Jethro Compton as a flirtatious Peter Mandelson – or ‘Mandy’, as he’s affectionately referred to - and Alex Stevens as George W Bush – the president who’s eaten one too many E-number additives in his bowl of Lucky Charms this morning.

Running through Blair's rise and falls, the writing handles the more sensitive and debated subjects with care, taking occasional risks with the humour, but which ultimately add to the commendable intelligence of this play.

"'Who wants to be a world leader when you could be Bono?'"

The music and songs by composer Ian McCluskey succeed in telling stories, providing humour, and being excellent pieces of song-writing in their own right. The barbershop quartet of Tory leaders is an example that has to be seen (and heard) to be believed!

Layers of humour within the writing provide a platform of entertainment for every possible audience member – the witty satire is intelligent enough for those in the know, while the sheer brilliance of the performances and song-writing cannot fail to attract even the youngest theatre-goer.

Sharp, engaging, original, and terrifically well performed, there just aren't enough positive words to say about this production. The play itself is a shining example of honest comedy writing, with both relevance and originality that theatre lovers can't help but fall for.

The likes of the big names in theatre should be clambering over one-another for this play, so it was nothing short of a privilege to see this particular rendition with such a truly talented cast, excellent band, and superb atmosphere to boot.

Definitely not to be missed.
