Lior at Fibbers 5th Feb 2007

Tom Wycks
It's been a busy year for Aussie singer Lior. Since the release of his first album he's enjoyed steadily growing popularity and three ARIA nominations (Australia's equivalent to The Brits).

Lior

Lior describes the events of the last year as a very organic process, as his album, through radio plays and requests from the public, has done far better than he ever imagined.

Here in York for the very first time he starts the gig at Fibbers with the title track Autumn Flow. It is a beautiful, soulful song that has the audiences’ attention immediately and it's clear from the first few notes that he has talent in abundance.

The crowd responds almost immediately. This, for many, will be the first time that they would have heard anything from Lior, but they are instantly captivated. The song is a good introduction to the man himself; it reflects his character. "I've learned to go with the flow, and that is what the flow wants to do." His laid back attitude is refreshing; he is a cool calm character, confident in his abilities and simply enjoys making music.

He is currently in the middle of introducing himself to UK audiences and is enjoying his time here, during what he describes as a “whirl-wind tour of the UK”, with plans to come back soon for more dates.

"Intimate gigs like this will become something of a rarity"

It would be safe to assume that intimate gigs like this will become something of a rarity. He flows between songs with ease, occasionally being joined on stage by Hannah Monkhouse on cello, a small addition that adds a lot to the performance.

Lior has a great range to his voice, he can be soft and gentle one minute and the next passionately bellowing out a heart felt lyric. His unique voice is laced with tinges of his Israeli childhood. His Middle-Eastern heritage is always close to the surface in what he does, whether it is in the style he projects his voice or within the lyrics. The Bedouin Song is the best example of this.

Autumn Flow is a fantastic debut album; it is a beautiful rendition of heartfelt songs that takes influence from many different places. The very fact that he is an Israeli born Australian songwriter, who is true to his roots, results in a great mixture of unique songs.

He is a charismatic, yet gentle singer-songwriter, who clearly takes time over his music. It means something to him, which ultimately makes for a better performance. With talk of a new album not too far away and a desire to come back to the UK, it will hopefully not be too long before he is back on our shores once more.
