Big Dance

Strictly Come Dancing
The Big Dance won't be this tricky!!

York's Big Dance!

This is your chance to help set the record for the World's Biggest Dance Class! You don't need to be an expert, in fact, even if you've got two left feet you can still get involved. Sign up now for the most fun you'll have all summer!

The important details!

Date: Saturday 22nd July 2006

Time: 11.30 - 1.30 (nb. the dance itself will take place at 12.30 prompt - please arrive early to avoid disappointment!)

Venue: Rowntree Park, York

The Big Dance will form part of a major live BBC 1 broadcast on July 22nd. The programme, called Dancing in the Street, will be hosted by Bruce Forsythe and is a spin-off of the 'Strictly…' series of dance programmes. The climax of the programme will be the announcement of a new World Record, set earlier in the day by all the people across the country who took part in their local Big Dance…

How will it work?

BBC Radio York, in partnership with Arts Council England, is hosting your local Big Dance event. It'll take place in Rowntree Park in York and will be open to everyone - all ages and all abilities! The Big Dance will take place between 12.30 and 12.40 precisely (no latecomers!!), and will be lead by dance experts. Everyone who takes part will get a memento of their record breaking moment.

Added extras!

"It's absolutely free to take part in the Big Dance, but you do need to get your name on a register"

As well as the Big Dance itself, there'll be dance groups doing demonstrations in the park between 11.30 and 13.30. BBC Radio York will also be doing a broadcast from the event. And, of course, there's a children's playground, a lovely lake to walk around and a café to enjoy at Rowntree Park.

How do I get involved?

It's absolutely free to take part in the Big Dance, but you do need to get your name on a register - this is really important since the BBC has to prove to the people at the Guinness Book of World Records that as many people took part as they said did! You can book your place by calling CSV Interaction at BBC Radio York, on 0845 366 1066.

The practical stuff

  • Clothing: If you do decide to come along for York's Big Dance, remember to dress appropriately.
  • Sun cream: With any luck it'll be a nice warm day. If it is, don't forget to protect yourself and your family from the sun's harmful rays!
  • Refreshments: Although there is a café at Rowntree Park, it'd be a good idea to bring some water with you.
  • Parking: Extra parking has been arranged for the Big Dance. This will be located on the field beside Millennium Bridge and at the end of Butcher Terrace, which is off Bishopthorpe Road. Please try and make use of these spaces if you need to drive to the Big Dance.
  • Buses: The number 11 bus will take you from York Station to Bishopthorpe Road
