Ron Fiske's Nelson collection
Ron Fiske's Nelson collection

Norfolk's Nelson enthusiast

Ron Fiske, a retired businessman from Norfolk has been collecting Nelson memorabilia for 40 years. He has one of the finest collections in the country, writes Mike Liggins.

A collector from south Norfolk has one of the finest collections of Nelson books, prints and memorabilia in England.

Ron Fiske, a retired businessman has been collecting Nelson memorabilia for 40 years and knows just about everything there is to know about the historical political figure. He even has an entire room in his house dedicated to the collection.

Books, pictures and a bust of Nelson adorn the room. He claims he doesn't know how many books he has, but thinks there might be a 'few thousand'.

Like many, Ron Fiske has long been captivated by the Nelson story.

"Nelson always led from the front. On many occasions he was foolhardy to do so.
He lost an arm that way and the sight in his eye. He was rash as well as courageous," he said.

A growing interest

His interest in Nelson began when he started collating books on Norfolk life. Ron has built his collection over the years by buying at sales, in bookshops and by dealing with other Nelson enthusiasts.

"I don't buy as much as I used to but I've still got that collectors spirit. If I see something I haven't got, I do get excited," he said.

His most prized possession is an extra illustrated book, which was a standard book on the life of Nelson, to which a Canadian scholar had added prints to illustrate the naval leader's life.

For men like Ron Fiske, the Nelson story has always had huge appeal, but he is adamant that England will still be celebrating the battle of Trafalgar in another 200 years.

He believes Nelson was a truly remarkable man and will always be a hero of Norfolk and England.
