Add your story to BBC Memoryshare On the 18th July 1934, over 200,000 people gathered at the Old Haymarket to watch King George V and Queen Mary, officially open the Queensway tunnel. Bill shares his memories on BBC Memoryshare "I was nine years old and remember walking with the other children from my school, Whitefield Road, all the way into town to see the official opening of the Queensway Mersey Tunnel by H. M. King George V and Queen Mary on 18th July 1934. ![]() Carved feature at Old Haymarket entrance "We all sat on the steps of the Liverpool Museum and waited patiently for the King and Queen and the other special guests to arrive. Their big cars eventually arrived and we waved our union jack flags and cheered as they drove past. "The crowds were enormous, people were standing on the Museum steps, in St John’s Gardens and all around the entrance to the tunnel right the way up to Dale Street...."
