The
African Caribbean group was founded as a way for like-minded individuals
to get together to socialise, share ideas and provide support, particularly
to those new to the city.
|
The
group's mission is to :
:: move forward and connect with people
:: reach out to other link groups
:: work in partnership with other community organisations
|
A
committee is now in place to facilitate the running of the group.
Members are Linda Liburd, Keith Alexander, Cindy Paul, Una Thomas,
Tapiwa Mudzekenyedzi and Pauline Savage.
 |
The
group also publishes a newsletter called 'In Touch'. In their first
issue they have been learning about bananas:
Bananas - did you know...
:: Bananas are one of the best sources of potassium which
lowers the risk of high blood pressure and related problems such
as heart attacks and strokes
:: They contain vitamin B6 which is good for the nervous
system and
proper tissue growth
:: Bananas were discovered by Alexander the Great in India
in 327BC
:: Fifty million tonnes of bananas are picked around the
world every year and 1/5 are exported
:: The Windward Islands and Jamaica began growing bananas
after the Second World War encouraged by the British who had sufficient
US currency to buy dollar bananas
:: A war between Washington and Brussels over EU banana quotas
led to the US placing tariffs of $190m on Scottish Cashmere, French
handbags and other luxury goods
:: The banana is one of the big five traded tropical products
along with sugar, coffee, cocoa and rubber
