 Lincoln's Brayford Wharf |
A
Short Roman Canal Walk The
City of Lincoln is steeped in history from the old iron age settlements,
to the Romans, the Normans and through the industrial age. It also has a
rich heritage of nature as it's situated in the middle of a large countryside
with fields stretching away for miles. |

More info:
You will see a variety of wildlife. Ducks and swans swim the canal, feeding
on the tiny duckweeds which float on the surface of the water. The reed
fringe growing in the shallower water at the canal's edge provides food
and shelter for damselflies and dragonflies during summer. Wildflowers
and butterflies can also be found on the canal banks.
You may have walked this stretch before but never known
that the Fossedyke was created by the Romans to link the River Witham
with the River Trent. It is one of the oldest canals in Britain - if not
THE oldest. The views of Lincoln on the hill are stunning with the Cathedral
dominating the skyline.
The walk will take you to The Pyewipe Inn, so there is
also a chance of a pint before you return either on foot or by boat.

Walk
conditions
Paths are tarmac and on the flat so the walk is very pushchair and wheelchair
friendly. Starting in the middle of Lincoln, next to the Brayford Pool,
walk along the waterfront with the canal on the left and follow it past
houses, a golf course and finally out of the city. Cross a small bridge
- the Fosse Dyke canal is still to your left with fields to your right.
The path ends at the Pyewipe Inn. Return by foot or by canal cruise. Health and Safety information
