Election 08: Roundup

The polls are closed, voting has finished and hopefully posters are coming down. Look back on the night…

Jersey's former Magistrate is one of two new States Members. Ian Le Marquand topped the Senatorial poll in every parish.

The five other Senators are Alan Breckon, Alan MacLean, Paul Routier, Philip Ozouf and Sarah Ferguson.

Senator Mike Vibert lost his seat - trailing in ninth place.

John Refault is the new Constable of St Peter and only one of two new faces in the States of Jersey.

Deputy Deidre Mezbourian is the new Constable of St Lawrence and Deputy Juliette Gallichan becomes the head of the parish in St Mary.

Senator Len Norman completes an electoral hat-trick - becoming Constable of St Clement - having also served as Deputy.

The vote for Central European Time didn’t go well for Senator Jim Perchard.

The NO vote overwhelmingly won the poll with 72% of those who voted rejecting plans to move Jersey to Central European Time.

That doesn’t necessarily mean it still won’t happen though. States Members will make the final decision as the result of the referendum is NOT binding.

Constables

The former parish secretary Juliette Gallichan will succeed outgoing Constable Ken Le Brun in St Mary.

She beat Terry Renouf by 404 votes to  252 .

St Lawrence has also elected a woman Constable in the form of Deputy Deirdre Mezouborian.

Deirdre Mezouborian is following in the footsteps of Iris le Feuvre who was Constable of the parish several years ago.

School voting

Ms Mezbourian beat Tim Tindall to succeed Geoffrey Fisher.

In St Clement Senator Len Norman will become the new Father of the Parish to replace Derek Gray who's to retire.

Mr Norman has served as Deputy, Senator and now Constable.

The new Constable of St Clement says his priorities will be to protect the countryside and involve more people in parish life.

Len Norman became only the third person in history to have held all three states roles, when he defeated two other candidates by a large margin. The last person to do that was J Le Marquand.

The new Constable says he won because he listened to what the people of St Clement wanted.

He told BBC Radio Jersey: "My priority is to represent the people as best I can. There are traffic issues that need to be addressed and there is the countryside zone that needs to be defended.

"Also there's social and cultural issues that need to be addressed by getting a more inclusive parish, getting more people involved in parish affairs - not just the administration but in social events and things like that."

And John Refault has beaten parish Deputy Collin Egre for the post of Constable in St Peter.

Sarah Ferguson

The only woman candidate in the election for Senator in Jersey says she's aiming to curb government spending.

Deputy Sarah Ferguson, who finished in sixth place told BBC Jersey: "I am looking forward to implementing the spending review and the efficiencies. The cost cutting not the service cutting that I've been preaching for the past few weeks around twelve hustings."

Frank Walker

Jersey's chief minister says the result of the election shows the public has chosen 'stability' over alternatives.

Senator Frank Walker

Senator Frank Walker says despite some attacks on the Council of Ministers during the campaign, the public showed its support of the current government.

He says he's pleased with the result of the vote.

Senator Walker told BBC Jersey: "There has been a great deal of criticism of ministers and a lot of attacks made on them but clearly that hasn't registered with the electorate in any meaningful way.

"Overall with the exception of Mike Vibert not getting in I think it is a vote for stability and I have to say I'm very happy with the result."

When the new States of Jersey meets in December they will elect the next Chief Minister.

New Ministers?

Senator Paul Routier wants to be the next Health Minister. After finishing fourth in last nights elections, he said he wanted to move on from his current post leading social security.

He says after steering the new social security system through the States, he wants a new challenge.

And he says Health is the service he wants to improve. He told us: "The Social Services department within Health and Social Services I personally think has been neglected for a long long time.

"I would like to think there is something I could offer to that area and we could focus on improving a lot of the things within that department."

Mike Vibert

Mike Vibert was the only sitting Senator to have lost his seat. The Education, Sport and Culture Minister finished ninth in the poll for six Senators.

Mike Vibert

He's declined to comment on his defeat - telling the BBC he wished to spend time privately with his family.

He has confirmed to BBC Radio Jersey that he doesn’t intend to stand for Deputy in November.

Have Your Say

What’s your reaction to the election? Turnout remained steady with previous years despite heavy investment in encouraging people to vote.

Did the people you wanted get elected/re-elected? Any real surprises on the night?

You are joking aren't you?
Very disappointing results! Same ol', same ol', why is it that many folks in Jersey are screaming for change, but the usual suspects are voted back in.

bad bob
Its time to leave the 'rock', extremely dissapointed. The public will now get the island they truly deserve.

Jokes aside
you think it's common sense to vote back into power the people who brought you GST (there ARE other options), who in reality have no care for environmental issues and are intent on turning Jersey into a miniature Hong Kong?

Joker
A good display of common sense from the electorate in both the election and the no vote on the change to CET.
