Skate park for St Helier at last

After five years of campaigning it looks like Jersey skaters will finally get a purpose built park, thanks to a proposition tabled to the States.

"Obviously this is excellent news and we’re bordering on ecstatic at the moment."

Jack Hipwell, President of CISA

Jersey may finally have a skate park by the end of the year.

A proposition was tabled in the States on Tuesday 16 January 2008 for a purpose-built facility on the New North Quay.

Deputy Ben Fox made the proposition, which also included the building of a youth and community centre at the Waterfront.

Skaters have been asking for a park for years, but have been refused numerous times because of legal and planning issues.

On the board

CISA have installed a ramp at St Ouen Youth Centre

'An ideal site'

The proposal is to build an outdoor park on the old TNT warehouse at the end of the quay, which he describes as “an ideal site”.

“It’s not the biggest of sites but it provides a permanent, all-year-round facility,” explained the St Helier deputy.

“We’ve spoken to a lot of young people over the years and they’re screaming out for a facility.”

Skating for Christmas

Deputy Fox said that the plan is to erect a marquee style cover over the park which should “keep off most of the rain and wind”.

He’s hopeful that the skate park will be “up and running by the end of the year” as it is relatively “easy to erect”.

Something, somewhere

Jake Hipwell, President of the Channel Island Skate Association (CISA), is delighted that years of campaigning have paid off:

“Obviously this is excellent news and we’re bordering on ecstatic at the moment,” he said.

“We’ve been looking at this and campaigning for this for over five years now… it’s not like we specifically wanted anywhere – we just wanted something somewhere!”

Outdoor vs indoor

Whilst an indoor skate park has some obvious advantages, it also brings with it a lot of red tape – for example first-aiders would need to be on the premises all the time it was open.

“I don’t want to bring in extra rules or legislation nor does the association because then you really discourage people from using it,” explained Jake.

An outdoor skate park on public land should come under the same jurisdiction as playgrounds – use at your own risk.

Jake said the proposed facility will “do a perfect job”.

'Very optimistic'

Funding for the New North Quay park is available from the Waterfront Enterprise Board, which has money set aside for a skate facility.

Both Deputy Fox and Jake are keen for CISA to be involved in the design process.

“It would be pointless to design it without the input of the people who are going to use it, because we’d end up with something that doesn’t necessarily meet the needs of the end user – that’s futile,” described Jake.

Deputy Fox is “very optimistic” that the park will be agreed and completed before the year is out.

“As you know, plans come and plans go…my proposition is there to cement it so we don’t have any more disappointments like we’ve had during the last four years,” explained the deputy.

'Getting stuck in'

Jake also assured that CISA will do all they can to ensure that St Helier finally gets its skate park.

“Obviously the skateboard association will be pushing hard to do everything we can,” he said.

“We’ll be getting stuck in and making sure that we put everything into it that we possibly can.”

I think that they should build another skatepark somewhere else in the island becuase at the moment the one that we have got now normally gets to full to skate in and the stupid bikers get in our way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hannah
but why shld we jst have facilities for skaters we need more facilities for other things aswell to stop ppl bein out and around twn coz young ppl jst get abuse from the public for bein drunk but if we all had facilities where we all had summin we cld enjoy doin then we wldnt have such a big problem

Phlip
About time i can't wait to do some kickflips

Arthur
I think it's a great idea! I skate at the skate ramp in st.ouens, im not the best at skating, but i enjoy it. Indoors or at leat protected from rain would be better because it rains so much.

Robin
There should be facilities where people can unicycle!

george
yay nd hury up !!!!!!

Chris
The states of jersey, are once again trying palm the kids off with substandard facilities. I've been a skater for over 20 years, and have seen it time and time again. Fair play to Jake and co at the Skate Association, i would have lost my temper with certain states members a long time ago!!! Hats off to Ben Fox and Simon Crowcroft though who have put a lot into helping the campaign!

lewis
anyway thinking laterally:if all skateboarders are given free first aid training then there isnt a problem with needing paid first aiders on site?

lewis
if the designers are clever enough - siting ramps etc - the area could be well protected from wind and rain, being actually 'indoor' in everything but name, thereby neatly sidesteping any 'legal and planning issues' :-)

paul
Must be Crete guys.Dont get sold on ANYTHING else. Trust me.

concrete is the way forward tbh..metal and wood sucks

We have petitioned for 10 years to have a skateboard park erected in Onchan Isle of Man. The protesters say it will be noisy, costly and they don't want 'that type of person' hanging around. Do you have tips to help our campaign.kerry@manx.netKindest RegardsKerry Teare

Yeah thanks so much to Jake et al. who have never given up. Can't wait. Just hope that it's not a typical Jersey half-hearted attempt. Fingers crossed that it's awesome.

Yes! Yes! YESSSSS!!I've been skating for 15 years and I have to say that I've been rather down of late due to Jersey's lack of decent skate spots...with a skatepark finally on the horizon maybe this old dog might finally learn some new tricks! Bring it on :)

Christopher
I'm sure when this park is built, we will see a lot of old faces who haven't skated for years!Certainly, this 29 year old will be dusting off his board after a few years of inactivity! Skateboarding - for kids??? You must be joking!

Christopher
About time too!!! Although i cannot understand the insurance problems? When you compare Skateboarding to Ice Skating, and the ridiculous number of injuries sustained at the temperary Ice Rink at the Parade over the Xmas period, Skateboarding is very safe in comparison! This project must allow the CISA full input on the building and layout of the proposed new Skatepark! Lets get it right this time, and have a Skatepark that is usable for years and years to come. The last thing anyone needs is another "Lame Duck", like Parks built in the past.Well done to Jake and all the guys at the CISA for all their hard work and patience...
