It's a major disappointment for several island games sportsmen and women, in particular to Badminton. Rhodes, the hosts in 2007, has announced there's to be no badminton, squash or bowls competitions in the 2007 Games in Rhodes. Badminton was one of the six core sports that each host island had to include, but a change in the Island Games constitution made last year means that's no longer so. Rhodes does not have badminton facilities, and will host a judo competition instead. Squash and Bowls will also not be taking place, but basketball, tennis, triathlon and judo will all be making a comeback. The decision will be deeply disappointing to several Jersey competitors, with our present Badminton and Squash teams having won gold in Shetland this week. |
