Thousands of new homes are being built across East Anglia.
To protect the countryside and our wildlife, the government has said that 60% of them should be built on 'brownfield land' - land that has previously been used.
But as Jess Whittaker finds out, our wasteland can be home to some of our most precious plants and animals.
Plans to build on Canvey Island in Essex and on one of Europe's biggest building sites in Peterborough, have had to be drastically reviewed due to the discovery of rare and endangered species.
The hard question remains, where to build our homes without destroying the homes of our wildlife
