
Richard Wellesley, the new governor-general, arrived in Calcutta in 1799. One of his first actions was to lay the foundation stone of Government House. This would come to represent his view of the British as rulers of India.
The governer of West Bengal now occupies Raj Bhavan. Tipu's throne is there, in addition to many rare works of art.
