Bath Abbey
Religious communities in Bath can be traced back to the seventh century, when a monastery of nuns was founded by King Osric, in AD 676.
In 1499 the Bishop of Bath ordered the building of the Abbey upon the remains of an earlier Norman cathedral, after a vision he had of angels ascending from the Holy Trinity. The angels he dreamt of are incorporated into the west front of the abbey.
After the dissolution of the monasteries 1536-40), the Abbey fell into disuse, but was restored by Bishop Montague in 1600.
