LA STORY...
Composer Rolfe Kent's route to Hollywood was every bit as unconventional as his scores. He studied psychology at Leeds University in the 80s and, despite having no formal music training, started writing scores for local theatre productions and industrial films. Some work in TV followed, and in 1991 he decided to try his luck in La-La-Land.
Whilst writing music for students' short films, he worked with a young filmmaker called Alexander Payne. He subsequently got his major break on Payne's debut, Citizen Ruth, in 1996. They've worked together ever since, on Election, About Schmidt, and Sideways.
Other films on Kent's CV include Nurse Betty, Legally Blonde, Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, and he's become the composer du jour for offbeat comedies. You can hear his work on the upcoming Owen Wilson comedy The Wedding Crashers. As for future projects, he says he'd love to do a Bond movie. Listen to this space...
