After bringing an extreme sports twist to the spy genre with xXx, director Rob Cohen took Top Gun hi-tech with Stealth. It's a "polished if derivative" flick where the villain isn't human but an artificially intelligent fighter jet. Jamie Foxx had already won an Oscar for Ray when this swooped into cinemas, but it still took a nosedive at the box office, grossing just $30m against a $130m budget.
Free Falling
Aside from the Make A Move music video by Incubus and a few trailers, the only bonus feature on this disc is The Music Of Stealth. Cohen bangs on about "wanting to do something new" that was "beyond the normal orchestral stuff". Enter fresh-faced composer BT who introduced the director to a concept called granular synthesis. Apparently this is the art of deconstructing a single note into anything up to 2000 parts and digitally rearranging it. For Cohen, this was perfectly in line with the concept of EDI (aka Extreme Deep Invader), which is "capable of taking anything from the human range, deconstructing it and rearranging it to his own desires". Plus, it sounds cool.

A Starless Sky
As if that wasn't bonkers enough, BT also has the entire string section of an orchestra playing their instruments with pens. It's an intriguing look at current innovations in music, but for much less money, they could have hired Björk doing weird screeching noises... Later on, fans of Incubus can enjoy interviews with the band who provide three original songs for the soundtrack. Unfortunately, there is no word from the film's stars, Jamie Foxx, Josh Lucas and Jessica Biel.
Overall this DVD offers a myopic look behind-the-scenes, dealing with just a small part of the filmmaking process. It's simply another reminder that, no matter how clever the engine, you can't get far on a near-empty tank.
