Grown black men masquerade as white teenage girls in White Chicks, a 'comedy' so horrifying it will "drain the colour from your cheeks". Keenen Ivory Wayans directs his brothers Shawn and Marlon in this universally panned movie, which nonetheless managed to bank just over $69m at the worldwide box office. We assume that's down to morbid curiosity.
More Powder Puff!
Michael Jackson should whip out his notepad as the Wayans' reveal their makeup secrets in How'd They Do That? Of course what we really want to know is: Why'd they do that? But no clues are offered here. Still, there are a few unintentional chuckles as starlet Jaime King says of the boys' transformation, "I could really see the spirit of my face!" (Perhaps she's talking about the same spirit that possessed Linda Blair in The Exorcist?) There are also a few squirm-inducing moments as director Keenan remarks of his brother, "Marlon looked gorgeous!" Man, that's so wrong, for so many reasons...
According to A Wayans Comedy, Shawn Wayans is the man to blame for all this. After flicking through a magazine article on Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, he was struck by insanity/inspiration, which was in turn fuelled by the excessive consumption of "yohimbe and green tea". In case you're wondering how this whacked out concept managed to slip through the studio net, the Wayans pitched it as: "Some Like It Hot meets Big Momma's House on a diet with Mrs Doubtfire in makeup." Genius!
Putting it all in a nutshell is Encore: On The Set, a glossy studio-produced featurette that regurgitates most of what we've already heard.
Black Out
Even the Wayans brothers get bored watching their own movie as evidenced in a feature commentary, where at one point, Marlon reveals, "Keenan's sleeping so Shawn and I will be taking over for the next hour." It's hardly worth the bother though as this is mostly just pregnant pauses punctured by mutual teasing (eg "Look at your big feet!" etc) and penetrating insights like, "Those contact lenses hurt like hell." Save yourself the pain and give this DVD a miss. White Chicks is definitely blackballed.
