The Rock, aka Dwayne Johnson, stars in Welcome To The Jungle, "a dunder-headed actioner of little wit and less invention". It's just as well this DVD doesn't take itself too seriously, opting instead for spoof humour and more Easter Eggs than a bunny could safely fit in a basket. You get the point...
Rock Hard
Among a slew of featurettes is Rumble In The Jungle, which goes deep into the physical demands required of the actors for their many fights scenes. "I'm willing to give you my body," says The Rock to director Peter Berg. So that explains it then...
But The Rock turns out to be a bit of a goer, as revealed in A Rockumenatry, a tabloid exposé of The Rock's intimate relationship with his co-star Kamila - a red-arsed baboon. Seann William Scott and director Peter Berg dish the dirt, as does the baboon's trainer, who recalls: "The Rock wanted the baboon to jump on his face and do pelvic thrusts." Nice.
Apart from the gratuitous monkey love, there's also superfluous violence in Appetite For Destruction - try not to snigger as Scott gets his butt blown up - and a look at the building of Helltown.
Walken's World is the weakest of all the featurettes, essentially just a chance for cast and crew to sit around and wax lyrical about "the genius" of this veteran actor. A distinctly unimpressed Walken saves the whole enterprise as he wraps his last scene and casually demands, "Bring me the cheque please."
Keep Walken...
There's yet more shoot-outs, punch-ups, and blow-ups in a reel of nine deleted scenes, which includes a not-so alternate ending. For the boys, there's also Rosario Dawson indulging in a little mud wrestling, but the highlight has to be Christopher Walken delivering the funniest utterance of the line "pig" in movie history.
Skip the producers' po-faced commentary in favour of director Peter Berg and The Rock talking absolute nonsense. Perhaps bored by the movie, they take to inventing ridiculous production info such as the revelation that they shot it on an island off the coast of New Jersey inhabited by a crossbreed of Samoans and New Jersey natives - "Jermoans". (Hey, no offence to any Jermoans out there...)
The best of seven Easter Eggs (scattered all over this disc) is Beck Vision, a visual effects featurette that exposes the layers of CGI wizardry that helped create many of the action scenes. Coming a close second is Rosario Dawson's long-winded contention that she got on with The Rock because they're both Taureans (well, it is the best sign of the zodiac). But the burning question remains unanswered: what sign was the baboon?
