Not only does George Clooney prove himself a highly capable director with this "beautifully composed movie, shot through with sadness", but he also manages a highly charismatic commentary on DVD.

A Reluctant Director
Given the number of people who aspire to direct, there may be some who'll put their fist through the TV when Clooney admits in one of seven behind-the-scenes featurettes that he never wanted to. Nonetheless, Clooney brought a theatre sensibility to the production that most actors crave on a film set, which in turn delivered the rough vitality behind this otherwise glossy production. Not bad for someone who never planned to direct!
A Charming Commentator
Clooney's commentary has all the charm of someone who's at ease with entertaining. He freely admits to borrowing tips and ideas from elsewhere, makes comments on film stock and sound design that prove accessible and relevant, while also slipping in humorous anecdotes that almost make you think he's addressing you personally.
"And The Crucified"

Trash TV king Chuck Barris, meanwhile, does not enjoy the same laidback air of Clooney. In the all too short but well produced featurette, The Real Chuck Barris, he wonders why he was so critically crucified in his time. Elsewhere on the DVD you should check out the screen tests that Sam Rockwell did as Barris, which include him doing a seriously funky dance. Plus you get to see five excruciating Gong Show acts in full and some deleted scenes that Clooney found justifiably hard to cut.
