Roadkill DVD (2002)

The scary road-rage movie from John Dahl finally hits DVD with not one, not two, but three audio commentaries and three alternate endings. What more could you ask for?

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture There's no shortage of chilling detail in this excellent transfer of an interestingly lit film.

Sound The 5.1 mix sounds like it's tearing great big rusty nails through your subwoofer once the tension starts mounting. Steel your flappers (ears) for a few good jumpy moments.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary One Director John Dahl opens his audio track by laying into the amount of drivel you find on audio commentaries. It's a foolhardy way to open his 94 minutes of thoughts as he often trails off in a commentary that's hardly going to set the DVD world on fire. In fact, his effort is quite typical in discussing script changes, casting, and technical information.

Audio Commentary Two Writers JJ Abrams and Clay Tarver reveal that they spent four years working on the script for the movie, in an otherwise pedestrian commentary track. They discuss the writing process, inspiration from films like "The Hitcher", and trying to avoid clichés of the horror genre.

Audio Commentary Three Is there anything left to say? Well actually if you want an entertaining commentary, then this effort with Leelee Sobieski and Steve Zahn is damn amusing.

Sobieski treats the track like a stand-up routine and begins by laying into DVD commentaries where people just end up describing what's going on on screen. As she warms up, she ups the naughty content by ensuring you don't miss any of her ass shots, and indeed scenes where her... well, nipples, are showing through her top.

Zahn doesn't mention his nipples but does chip in with some redneck-style observations, and chats about his love of CB radio.

Featurette It's a typical four-minute cheesy promo effort. In fact, exactly the type of featurette John Dahl lays into in his commentary.

More than One Rusty Nail It turns out that a few familiar actors tried out for the role of Rusty Nail. And in this feature you get a scene from the film, where you can alternate between the vocal talents of Eric Roberts, Stephen Shellen, and the ultimate winner, Ted Levine.

Roberts sounds surprisingly camp, while Shellen ruins his sexy take with an awful smoker's laugh. As for Levine, well he Rusty Nails it!

More than One Version You know how, when you find a DVD with an alternate ending, you get all excited and then find it's about 40 seconds long? Well this DVD packs a mother load style 27-minute alternate ending. As John Dahl explains in the optional commentary, he felt it lacked tension. It isn't as exciting but it's got plenty more Paul Walker nudity for any fans who dream of him sans clothes.

But wait! There's more! With this DVD you also get another alternate seven-minute ending plus an additional alternate three-minute ending. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a storyboard ending intercut with footage shot for it. All these segments come with alternate commentary tracks from either John Dahl (who doesn't seem perturbed by his need to keep changing his mind once the money is spent), or JJ Abrams, Clay Turner, and Leelee Sobieski.

Additional Extra Features Also on the DVD is a deleted scene (only one!) and a trailer.
