Meg Ryan in a romantic comedy! Shock news indeed, even for Meg, as she reveals on this DVD, which includes a director's cut of the film.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture Warm, rich tones fill the screen in a quality transfer.
Sound The 5.1 mix does what any good romantic comedy track should do and cossets you in a snug music score that takes ample advantage of the surround speakers.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Audio Commentary Director James Mangold's commentary is the same for either version of the film you pick. His special cut contains a few extra minutes and an alternate ending.
Mangold points out the differences between both cuts, and disects the film's structure in minute detail. He clearly thinks long and hard about his movies and relentlessly seems to be trying to edit a mass of material down whether it be at the stage of script, shooting, or beyond final cut. His chatter may prove a little too busy for some, but you can't accuse him of hiding his thoughts or feelings on the film as he surely can't have anything more left to say after this commentary.
On the Set This 14-minute behind-the-scenes glimpse is only mildly cheesy and features plenty of footage of the stars in action. Everyone is keen to offer their opinion on what the film is. Meg Ryan thinks it's "an urban fantasy", while Mangold reckons it's "a kind of urban fable". Hugh Jackman settles for "an old-fashioned love story". There are other snippets on the plot and characters, and Meg muses on why she does romantic comedies all the time.
Costume Featurette Learn next to nothing in two minutes about the costume design.
Deleted Scenes Seven deleted scenes with 5.1 sound. Mangold is on hand via a commentary to worry over whether the footage should have been deleted or not. Most seems to have been dropped in his endless quest for tight editing.
