Hollywood has made a lot of money out of spooky movies where ghouls roam the hallways of a haunted mansion and villains return from the dead. It's not all confined to the silver screen, though, as Tinseltown itself is the site of much scariness, with dead stars often returning to the places of their former glories. Here's a few sightings...
Orson Welles Since the "Citizen Kane" star's death in 1985, he has been seen a number of times at his favourite table in his favourite restaurant on Melrose Avenue. He is often seen wearing a black cape, while punters have smelt phantom cigar smoke and non-existent brandy (Welles' preferred tipple).
Montgomery Clift The intense "Red River" star died of heart disease aged only 45. But in 1952 he spent three months at The Roosevelt Hotel, on Hollywood Boulevard, rehearsing for his role in "From Here to Eternity". Ever since his demise 14 years later, his ghost is said to haunt Room 928, pacing up and down, playing the trumpet, and reciting his lines.
Marilyn Monroe The Roosevelt Hotel is also host to another celebrity spook. The blonde bombshell frequently stayed in Suite 1200, which contained a full-length mirror that the famously insecure actress used to stare at. The mirror now resides next to the lift on the lower level and many guests claim to have seen Monroe's image looking back at them.
Jayne Mansfield By far the strangest story belongs to this other blonde sexpot, whose bizarre life came to a tragic end in a car crash at the age of 34. A member of the Church of Satan, legend says the religion's founder placed a curse on Mansfield's manipulative lawyer Sam Brody, who was blackmailing her. While driving to New Orleans with Brody, the car crashed and both were killed.
Since then, Mansfield's Bel Air home, The Pink Palace, has played host to several odd incidents. Whenever new owners painted over the pink walls, the house always reverted back to pink - no matter how many coats were applied. A certificate declaring Mansfield a Church of Satan priestess appeared on her bedroom wall. Witnesses have seen her ghost relaxing in a bikini by the pool, while current owner Engelbert Humperdinck once saw her walking down the stairs.
