Francis Ford Coppola returns to his Vietnam war epic from 1979. With the 49 minutes of additional footage, this 194-minute monster in now available on a DVD with no extras, and as such, the star rating refers only to the presentation of the film.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture There really is an incredibly eerie quality to the misty riverbank locations of this film. The DVD transfer handles these scenes well, without letting grain creep in, and the additional footage looks every bit as sharp as the original cut.
Sound The non-Redux "Apocalypse Now" DVD boasts a fine 5.1 mix, but this new 5.1 Dolby mix is every bit as good as a modern blockbuster. The subwoofer channel is heavily used for an audio experience that will root you to the spot as it explores mighty depths of fear-inducing bass, while the hypnotic helicopter sounds swoop around the speakers. The one complaint is that a DTS mix was also created for the 2001 theatrical re-issue, but it's not on the DVD.
