Delicatessen DVD (1991)

No one was really quite ready for "Delicatessen" when it came out ten years ago. You'll be glad to hear that it's just as deliciously strange as it ever was on the new DVD release.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture The use of a lot of smoke in many of the scenes, combined with the low budget, does make "Delicatessen" quite grainy, but the DVD doesn't add any problems of its own.

Sound A lot of attention was paid by Marc Caro to the sound effects in the film and it would have been interesting to hear this movie upgraded to 5.1. The 2.0 surround mix that's on the disc is quite effective though.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary Marc Caro is not keen on audio commentaries, so it's left to fellow director Jean-Pierre Jeunet - who loves the idea of commentaries - to take-up the reins. The inspiration for the film came from the days when Jeunet lived above a butcher's shop and would wake up every morning to the sound of the butcher chopping away (nice!). Over the years, some misconceptions over plot points have built-up so Jeunet uses the opportunity to straighten these out. He's also got plenty to talk about regarding budget restrictions and how the crew worked around them.

Fine Slices from Diane Bertrand Here you'll find a compilation of behind-the-scenes footage. It's certainly interesting to see the innovative ways they produced the special effects.
