Withnail & I DVD (1987)

According to an interview with casting director Mary Selway on this DVD of "Withnail & I", she didn't even know until recently what a cult following this has. Well it does, but will they be happy with this disc? There's certainly much to please.

Despite the lack of an anamorphic transfer (a process which carries extra coding to create a more detailed picture on a widescreen TV), the picture is remarkably fresh at times. There's a little grain during some of the darker scenes, but that's down to the original photography rather than the disc.

The 5.1 sound mix is to be avoided. It's simply a mono mix replicated in all available speakers and results in a dominant dialogue track for the rear speakers, which is just silly. Choose the mono mix and forget the 5.1 option.

There's a brand new audio commentary with actors Paul McGann and Ralph Brown for this release, and it's a mildly interesting affair. Both have anecdotes that reveal the paltry budget of the film and the near state of poverty the actors were living in, never mind the characters they were playing.

If you're after comments from Richard E Grant, you'll find some in the amusing documentary 'Withnail and Us'. Director Bruce Robinson sums up his feelings on the movie by declaring it to be "craply shot, but great dialogue". There are also some behind-the-scenes photos to look at, a trailer, and an A3 poster for your wall.
