The Broken Hearts Club DVD (2001)

Billed as a romantic comedy, and peppered with amusing moments, "The Broken Hearts Club" hits DVD with some enthusiastically produced extra features.

The colour scheme of the movie is very much about warmth, with yellows and oranges dominating so much there is the potential for some hazy smearing between the shades. Thankfully, none are to be found here in this excellent picture transfer.

There's not much call for car chases or loud activities in this type of film, but the music score makes good advantage of the 5.1 soundstage and the rears carry general atmospherics to good effect.

It's unlikely that you'll learn much from the audio commentary with writer/director Greg Berlanti and producer Mickey Lindell. It's more of a pleasant chat than a fact-filled deconstruction of the movie, but that's to be welcomed over some of the horrendously dull and overly serious commentaries out there.

Greg sits in for commentaries on the seven deleted scenes on the disc. He's quite amusing to listen to as he kicks off most of the segments with phrases like, "Here we go!". It's a bit like being on the Waltzers at the fairground. Sadly, it's not as exciting, and at no point does Greg ask us to scream or put our hands in the air but why not just do it anyway.
