John Waters is back and in the mood to punish bad cinema with "Cecil B. Demented". Despite the action sequences and hip-hop music, this is still very clearly a John Waters movie and it's now out on a pleasing enough DVD.
Long-time fans of John Waters will be used to inferior picture quality on many of his older movies. In contrast, "Cecil B Demented" looks a treat and is transferred to DVD with obvious care.
The 2.0 surround mix offers good bass support despite the lack of a sub-woofer channel, and the various moments of mayhem in the movie offer the rear speakers a few effects to play with.
Unlike the US release, there's no director's commentary but we do get some remarkably profound comments from the cast and crew in a series of short interviews. Melanie Griffith utters that phrase that we never thought would be attributed to Stephen Dorff: "Stephen is an excellent actor". As for Stephen he has the following comment to pass on John Waters: "He's written...wrote [sic] a script that's original". Aside from the interviews, the film's fun and the disc is divine. Now when might Universal plan to release Water's excellent "Cry Baby"?
